- drug addiction is a dangerous disease, which is developed in young
years, it leads to quick disability of a person and quite often to
premature death;
- increase of narcotization of Belarusian population involves crime,
diseases, injuries, disability, break-up of families, shortening of
life duration;
- every fifth Belarusian family, as scientists claim, collides with
the consequences of drug addiction;
- during his short life an average drug addict introduces 10-15
people to regular drug use;
- the majority of drug addicted people reside in Belarusian cities:
Minsk, Svetlogorsk, Soligorsk, Pinsk, Lida, Brest, Kobrin, Borisov;
- in accordance with statistic data an average Belarusian drug
addict is a man aged 30, having no education (3%-students who in
most cases leave studying; 2-3% have higher education);
- in year 2006 919 lethal cases among HIV-positive people were
registered in Belarus, 685 (74,5%) of them were drug addicts;
- the main way of HIV transmission is parenthetic (while injecting
drugs) - 64,2% (4906 cases were registered in year 2006);
- more than 50% of drug addicts have convictions, about 30% were
convicted two or more times;
- 71% of drug addicts have no families (single);
- according to anonymous questionnaire of young people, held by the
Ministry of Health together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs,
65-67% of young people support drug legalization;
- 35% of Belarusian students are in risk zone, as they are
personally acquainted with people who consume drugs;
- 80% of children and youngsters who get into groups of drug addicts
develop drug addiction;
- not more than 5% of drug addicted people in Belarus ask for
medical aid, on the whole, they are revealed by the police or
diagnosed when get to a hospital;
- average duration of hospitalization of a drug addict is 6-18 days;
as a rule after 3-5 days patients feel better and refuse further
treatment;
- forced (according to the court decision) treatment of drug addicts
is usually conducted at mental clinics or in prisons;
- at present in Belarus there is neither state social care service
drug addicts can apply for, nor shelters for disabled drug addicts.
